OVER OR AROUND

By Sally I Kennedy

The river was higher than usual. A great amount of rainfall through the year had caused it to swell its banks. This fall the water wasn’t gurgling and bubbling along, rather it was churling and rushing in a steady rapid flow.

The small part of the river I could see from the window had some pretty good-size boulders. There were other rocks, all sizes from the tiny chips at the river bottom to the massive stones. Whenever the river water came to one of these rocks, it didn’t stay there. The rock didn’t prevent the water from continuing on.

The river rolled over pebbles and smaller rocks. It went around boulders and larger rocks. Sometimes additional waters came alongside and joined with the water at the rock, supporting it to move past the obstacle.

When we encounter formidable roadblocks in our lives, it is important to carry on. There is always a way. We know that the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy. He does not want to sort of mess up our lives, he wants to totally wreck them and ultimately separate us from God.

But God is life. John 10:10 talks about the abundant, over-the-top life that Jesus brings to us. Sometimes we go it alone, other times we need help and support from a family member, close friend, prayer partner, bible study group etc. But always we need the guidance of our friend, the Holy Spirit.

The river water did not encounter a deterrant and say, “oh no! I am stuck here. What am I going to do?.” One way or another, over or around, it kept persevering. There is always a solution, always a way….over or around, with God.
