Taizé

I recently attended a Taizé prayer session, and found it to be very calming, inspiring and amazing experience.

The Taizé community was founded by the late Brother Roger in 1940. It is made up of many people across various nations representing both Protestants and Roman Catholics. The community focuses on prayer and Christian meditation.

The minute I entered the chapel, I was overwhelmed by the presence of the Holy Spirit. The chapel was dimly lit, with a cross, picture of Christ and tealight candles surrounding it. Beautiful chanting music can be heard in the background. Most of the people are quietly praying, reflecting, meditating.

  • The prayer session began with a few short songs of praise, when sung repeatedly, gives a meditative character and further enhance one's experience with God.
  • This was followed by a reading from the Bible.
  • More meditative music followed on. During this time, one is welcome to come forward to offer up personal intentions by lighting up the tealights placed around the cross and picture of Christ.
  • There is a moment of silence, for all to spend some time with God for prayer and reflection.
  • More music and chanting.
  • Offering of prayer intentions by anyone who wishes to do so.
  • More meditative music
  • End with Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be
